If you are looking to take a trip off the beaten path this summer or simply want to get lost while enjoying some of the most amazing views the country has to offer, consider a road trip to Cody Yellowstone Country. No matter what route you take in northwestern Wyoming, it will be nothing less than a stunning visual feast for the eyes and a history lesson your family won’t forget.
Cody Yellowstone Country has been a premiere American adventure destination for several generations. From bison and bears, you’ll not only find yourself in the heart of cowboy country, but also in one of the most unforgettable regions the west has to offer (after all, they do say the west is always the best). From The Chief Joseph Scenic Byway to the Beartooth Loop, it is a great place for families to discover and explore the road less taken.
“Yellowstone Country has been a Great American Adventure destination for generations, with road-trippers traveling from near and far to see bison and bears, experience the cowboy culture of Cody and view the geothermal features of Yellowstone National Park,” said Claudia Wade, executive director of the Park County Travel Council, the marketing arm of the destination that includes the towns of Cody, Powell, Meeteetse and the valley east of Yellowstone. “This is a region with many surprises around the next bend, and we urge travelers to slow down and savor the experience of getting here.”
In addition to the sights, families will also get a fun family lesson and out-of-classroom experience for the kids. There’s a reason why an area of Park County is called Buffalo Bill’s Cody Yellowstone Country. That’s because it was once considered the playground of Buffalo Bill Cody himself. Thousands of guests visit the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave on Lookout Mountain just outside of Denver each year. But that might not be his true burial location while there are some that believe it is an unmarked grave right outside of Cedar Mountain.
If that weren’t enough, the Buffalo Bill Center of the West is a world-class facility that holds five different museums. It was recently named one of the top Western museums in the country, and for a good reason, too. In addition to the Buffalo Bill museum, it also includes Draper Natural History Museum, Plains Indian Museum, Whitney Western Art Museum and Cody Firearms Museum. Visitors get to wander through the expansive museums and rotating exhibits that highlight some of the best in Western art.
And if you really want to step back in time, check out Buffalo Bill’s Irma hotel. Baptized as a “gem” by Buffalo Bill himself, it sits right outside Yellowstone National Park. Today, you can stay at one of the historic rooms that has had some very famous guests including Annie Oakley and Calamity Jane or stay at Buffalo Bill’s private suite. All rooms are up to date with amenities and air conditioning. Travel before June 20 for the best lodging availability.
For more information, check out the Park County Travel Council or call 1-800-393-2639 to arrange a visit. To make a reservation at the Irma Hotel, call 1-800-745-4762.
